River pollution

The river which passes through our village in Sukaratu,
subdistrict of Warung Kondang in Cianjur, is being polluted due
to sand mining.

It is regrettable that both the local administration and
businessmen have failed to anticipate the impact of the mining
which has been going on for almost a year now.

Efforts have been made to hold a meeting between government
officials and the people but up until now nothing has eventuated.
The pollution has caused skin diseases on the villagers and
affected the agricultural and fish harvests.

We do not want our environment ruined and we refuse to resort
to violent solutions as in the case of Cimangkok village. We have
exercised patience for a year, and God willing, we will continue
to exercise patience and restraint.

We appeal to the local administration and the businessmen
concerned to make a survey on the quality of the polluted water
as soon as possible.
