Rise of 'STNK Only' Car Sales on Social Media, Avanza-BRV Prices Shock

The practice of buying and selling vehicles with ‘STNK only’ status is increasingly easy to find on social media. Not just motorcycles, cars are also being openly marketed at prices far below market value. A search by CNBC Indonesia across several Facebook groups found numerous posts selling vehicles equipped only with a vehicle registration document (STNK) and no certificate of ownership (BPKB). The prices offered are relatively cheap. One seller offered a 2010 Yamaha Mio Smile with ‘STNK only’ status for Rp3.8 million. The description stated the motorcycle still uses a standard factory engine, while the vehicle’s condition is sold as-is with some modified parts. Another post offered a 2016 Honda Vario 125 with a similar status. The motorcycle was priced at Rp6.5 million, with a description stating the engine is still in prime condition and regularly serviced. The seller also listed several shortcomings, from a speedometer that needs repair to a rear rim that is dented from hitting a pothole. Not only two-wheeled vehicles, cars are also being marketed in a similar pattern. A 2015 manual transmission Nissan Almera was offered with only the STNK for Rp28 million. The seller claimed the car’s engine is still smooth, the air conditioning functions normally, the suspension is quiet, and the oil has just been changed so it is ready to use. There is also a 2017 manual Toyota Avanza being sold for Rp45 million, while a 2013 manual Agya TRD S is being sold for only Rp31 million and is still negotiable. The most shocking is a 2024 Honda BR-V Prestige being sold for Rp87 million, still negotiable. The car’s condition is pristine with only 25,000 kilometres on the odometer, a quiet suspension, and a cool-running engine. The phenomenon is also visible from the many ‘STNK only’ vehicle buying and selling communities on Facebook. Some groups even have tens to hundreds of thousands of members, with activity exceeding 80 to 90 posts every day. The group names explicitly mention buying and selling ‘STNK only’ motorcycles, empty vehicles, and single-document vehicles covering various areas such as Jakarta, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bogor, Depok, and surrounding regions. The rise of such transactions is a concern for financing industry players. This is because the vehicles being traded are generally still under a credit period, meaning the ownership document, the BPKB, is still held by the financing company. ‘It is now rampant on social media, the buying and selling of STNK only vehicles. In fact, the BPKB is still held by the financing company and the vehicle’s status is still under credit,’ said Suwandi Wiratno, Chairman of the Indonesian Financing Companies Association (APPI), to CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (2/7/2026). This situation means buyers need to be more careful before being tempted by cheap prices. This is because a vehicle that is still a financing object can cause problems when the financing company collects from a delinquent debtor or takes legal action in accordance with applicable regulations. ‘The problem now is that the vehicle has sometimes moved to a second, third, or even fourth party outside proper legal procedures,’ said Suwandi.
