Rise in BTS Concert Ticket Fraud Underscores Need for Digital Identity Integration

Ticket fraud cases have returned to the public spotlight following an incident involving prospective attendees of the BTS World Tour ARIRANG concert in Jakarta. The phenomenon emerged as tickets sold out within minutes, a situation subsequently exploited by scalpers who resold tickets at exorbitant prices outside official channels. The modes of fraud varied, ranging from selling a single ticket to multiple buyers to sellers disappearing entirely after receiving payment. Consequently, several victims reported significant financial losses, ranging from Rp2.5 million to tens of millions of rupiah.

Responding to this recurring phenomenon, Founder and CEO of Privy, Marshall Pribadi, assessed that the core issue lies in the weak identity verification within the current ticketing ecosystem. Although official platforms require manual input of national ID card (KTP) numbers, the process does not verify that the person entering the data is the legitimate owner of the identity. “Manually inputting a KTP number does not verify that the person entering it is the true owner of that identity. Thus, unscrupulous individuals can still hoard tickets using other people’s identities. When ticket purchases are integrated with a verified digital identity, one Digital ID can only purchase tickets for one corresponding NIK,” Marshall explained.

Beyond eradicating scalpers, digital identity integration allows organisers to implement stricter filters. Several countries have already explored this technology to secure their entertainment ecosystems. Privy offers Digital ID infrastructure through two main services, PrivyHub and Login with Privy, which enable every ticket transaction to be bound to a legally verified individual, thereby minimising the use of fake identities or mass purchases by scalpers. Marshall asserted that the effectiveness of this service has been proven in various other sectors, providing a strong foundation for immediate implementation in Indonesia’s ticketing industry. As an Electronic Certification Provider (PSrE), Privy also offers added value in the form of a Certificate Warranty of up to Rp1 billion, providing financial protection for users in the event of losses due to identity misuse on electronic certificates issued by Privy. “Thus, the use of digital identity encourages a safer, more comfortable, and accountable ticketing ecosystem,” Marshall concluded.
