If the lootings and riots in Medan had not been broadcast by private television stations, the looters in Jakarta might not have imitated the action. The Jakarta incidents came after those in Medan. Hamami Nata, former Jakarta regional police chief, once said haughtily that if Jakarta were like Medan, he would wager on his job.

Apart from the possibility that the riots were organized, broadcasting or freedom should be accompanied by responsibility. The telecasts led people to imitate.
