Mount Rinjani now has an information centre used as an educational space on geology. The centre, named Geopark Rinjani, also houses various collections of rocks from ancient volcanic lava to a diverse range of flora.

West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Governor Lalu Muhammad Iqbal explained that Geopark Rinjani functions as a museum and information hub related to Mount Rinjani. According to him, tourists who wish to learn about Mount Rinjani can visit the information centre located in the Sembalun area, East Lombok.

“They (tourists) can learn about Geopark Rinjani. It’s like a semi-museum,” said Iqbal on Saturday night (2/5/2026).

Iqbal emphasised that he rejects investors intending to build luxurious facilities in the Mount Rinjani area. He views Mount Rinjani as a spiritual identity for the NTB people that must be protected.

“Mount Rinjani belongs to all of Lombok’s people, even all of humanity. This is our heart, our spirit, our soul. Even the slightest damage to this mountain will have widespread impacts,” added Iqbal.

The Manager of Research and Development at Geopark Rinjani, Meliawati, explained that this facility is open to the public and tourists. Meliawati hopes that the existence of Geopark Rinjani can facilitate tourists in accessing information on geology.

Geopark Rinjani stores various information in video format, informational boards, to storybooks to make it easier for children to understand. “So, by coming here, they take home more knowledge,” said Meliawati.
