Ring road will connect East, West Jakarta
JAKARTA (JP): People who live in South Jakarta will soon be freed from traffic congestion as the Ministry of Public Works has started to extend the Jl. TB Simatupang outer ring road from its terminal at Pondok Pinang in South Jakarta to Joglo in the west.
A spokesman for the South Jakarta mayoralty told The Jakarta Post yesterday that there are two main road projects underway here now. They are the extension of Jl. TB Simatupang, an outer ring road which will connect the east with the western parts of the city, and the toll road which will connect Ulujami, in South Jakarta and Serpong, 10 kilometers west of the city, said M. Yanis, the spokesman.
He said that for the outer ring road project, the city administration listed all the plots of land and properties to be appropriated.
The city administration has also started to calculate the compensation prices for the Ulujami-Serpong toll road.
The Jl. TB Simatupang extension road will be seven kilometers long while the Ulujami and Serpong road is 13 kilometers long -- two kilometers of which will pass through Jakarta and the rest through West Java's areas of Tangerang regency.
He said that the construction of Jl. TB. Simatupang extension road will cover 630,000 square meters of land in the areas of Pondok Pinang, Bintaro, Ulujami, Petukangan Utara and Petukangan Selatan.
Yanis refused to give more details about the construction of Ulujami-Serpong toll road because most part of it will be located in West Java.
However, he said that the city administration has planned to finish all land clearances for both projects in the 1994-1995 fiscal year because construction will begin in 1995.
World Bank
The official refused to disclose the construction costs but he said the funds came from the World Bank through the Jakarta Urban Development Project.
Yanis said that the construction of the outer ring road was an important step in the efforts to solve the city's traffic problem.
The city administration, he said, has planned to relocate all of the inter-city bus terminals along the road.
"We are doing this so the buses will not have to pass the inner city main road anymore," he said.
He said that the inter-city bus terminals in Kampung Rambutan, East Jakarta and Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, are already located near the outer ring road.
But the Pulo Gadung terminal in East Jakarta and Kalideres in West Jakarta need to be relocated. The two will be relocated to Pulo Gebang and Rawa Buaya respectively which are nearer to Jl. TB Simatupang.
Yanis said that the Ministry of Public Works will build a toll road, overpasses over the median line of Jl. TB Simatupang and an underpass at its every crossing point.
"The ministry will also build overpasses on some crossroads in Tanjung Barat, Cilandak, Fatmawati, Pasar Jum'at, Bintaro and Ulujami and an underpass at the crossroad of Jl. Ragunan-Warung Buncit," he said. (03)
