RIMPAC 2026 Tests Unmanned Technology for Joint Military Operations

The Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 multinational military exercise is testing unmanned systems and new technologies to support joint military operations, as part of more than 35 experiments during the drills. Commander Combined Task Force (CCTF) RIMPAC 2026 Vice Admiral Jeffrey T. Jablon stated that the various experiments are being conducted to understand how new capabilities can be integrated into operations, while providing direct feedback to operators from the early stages of development. One historic experiment involved unmanned resupply at sea, when the unmanned surface vessel Typhoon autonomously entered the well deck of the USS Essex. RIMPAC 2026 also demonstrated 3D printing on board a ship connected to delivery by autonomous drone. The technology testing took place amid increased multinational cooperation in RIMPAC, which Jablon said has been a theme since the exercise began in 1971. Initially involving five nations, RIMPAC has now expanded to 30 countries, including Indonesia, reflecting a growing number of like-minded nations joining to build trust, relationships, and interoperability. RIMPAC 2026 brings together more than 30,000 personnel, 31 surface ships, five submarines, and over 190 aircraft for training in and around Hawaii.
