Rights body assesses detention centers

JAKARTA: Four officials from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) visited the Jakarta Police Headquarters detention center on Monday.

"The condition (of the detention center) is quite good and humane," said a member of the commission, Lies Sugondo, after touring a detention center for general crime and drug suspects.

She declined to give any details on the results of the visit, saying she first had to hold discussions with other commission members.

Besides the detention centers, the team -- comprising Lies, Habib Irjin, Hasto Atmojo and Farid -- also visited the interrogation rooms at the headquarters.

City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo said the visit was aimed at assessing whether the police violated the rights of detainees and suspects. -- JP
