Rifat's co-driver Karel dies at 43

JAKARTA: Karel Harilatu, a co-driver of national rally championship leader Rifat Sungkar, died at the age of 43 here on Tuesday from an apparent heart attack, according to Antara.

Karel, who was buried on Wednesday at the Menteng Pulo Cemetery in South Jakarta, is survived by his wife and three children.

The Asia Pacific Rally Championship in Makassar on Sunday was his last competition where he helped Rifat finish in sixth in Asia Pacific category and third in the national championship.

"I think he was one of the best navigators. He was a hard- working person and had a great sense of humor. We were around together in Makassar just a few days ago. Now we will miss him," former navigator Jeffrey JP said. - JP
