Rieke Attends Nyepi Remission Ceremony, Highlights Inmates' BPJS Rights
Member of the House of Representatives Commission XIII, Rieke Diah Pitaloka, attended the ceremony for granting Nyepi Day remission to Hindu inmates. Rieke highlighted issues regarding the BPJS membership rights of correctional facility residents or inmates (napi). She stated that she would discuss social security rights for inmates, given the limited correctional budget, considering the overcrowded conditions of prisons where the number of occupants exceeds capacity. “We will develop discussions on fulfilling the rights of correctional residents to mandatory BPJS membership, as we know the correctional budget is insufficient,” said Rieke at the Class I Cipinang Detention Centre in East Jakarta on Wednesday (18/3/2026). She hopes that local governments will also pay attention to social security for their residents who are inmates, especially those who are economically disadvantaged. “We hope for attention from local governments to facilitate the fulfilment of rights for underprivileged correctional residents to become BPJS members,” Rieke stated. During the remission granting ceremony, she, along with the Director General of Corrections of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Dirjenpas Kemenimipas) Mashudi, the Head of the Jakarta Dirjenpas Regional Office Heri Azhari, and the Head of the Cipinang Detention Centre I Gusti Agus Cahyana Putra, directly handed over remission documents to representatives of recipient Hindu inmates. The inmates receiving the Special Religious Holiday Remission and child residents receiving the Special Sentence Reduction for Nyepi were mostly from Bali, totalling 1,090 people, followed by Central Kalimantan with 121 people and West Nusa Tenggara with 77 people. It is known that this policy of granting special remission and sentence reduction also impacts state budget efficiency. On the occasion of Nyepi 2026, Dirjenpas Kemenimipas recorded a budget efficiency of Rp 1,024,230,000. Previously reported, 1,506 inmates received special remission on the occasion of the Holy Day of Nyepi, the Saka New Year 1948. Then, 9 child residents received Special Sentence Reduction (PMPK). The Holy Day of Nyepi, Saka New Year 1948, falls on Thursday (19/3/2026). Of the total 1,506 inmates who received remission, four of them will be immediately released tomorrow. “The granting of remission and sentence reduction on religious holidays is part of fulfilling the rights of correctional residents, as well as a coaching instrument in the correctional system,” said Director General of Corrections Mashudi while reading a written speech from the Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto, at the Class 1 Cipinang State Detention Centre (Rutan Cipinang), Wednesday (18/3). He stated that the granting of remission and sentence reduction has been carried out according to applicable rules and requirements. He emphasised that remission and sentence reduction are a form of appreciation from the correctional system to inmates and child residents who have consistently shown good behaviour during the coaching process. The details of remission and sentence reduction recipients are as follows: Special Remission I - 326 people with 15-day remission - 947 people with 1-month remission - 179 people with 1 month 15-day remission - 50 people with 2-month remission Special Remission II - 4 inmates directly released after receiving remission PMPK - 8 people with 15-day reduction - 1 person with 1-month reduction.
