Ride-Hailing Commission Cut to 8%, Responses from Drivers, App Operators, and Government
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto has officially reduced the cap on app commissions for online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers from the previous 20% to a maximum of 8%. The policy is enshrined in Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 27 of 2026 on the Protection of Online Transportation Workers, announced to coincide with International Labour Day 2026. In his speech at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Friday (1/5/2026), Prabowo stated that the revenue-sharing scheme for driver partners has now been enhanced. Previously, drivers received around 80% of the total trip fare; under the new regulation, drivers’ revenue share is set at a minimum of 92%. “Earlier, the revenue split was 80% for drivers, now it’s a minimum of 92% for drivers,” Prabowo said. “That’s excellent. It’s the dream of all drivers. We hope it truly gets realised,” said Diah in the Monas area, Central Jakarta, on Friday (1/5/2026), quoted from Kompas.com. In contrast to ojol drivers, Sule (46) doubts whether this Perpres will be fully followed by app operators. “I think that’s impossible. It won’t go that far. The President can issue the regulation, but the app companies often don’t implement it,” said Sule at the same location. Although it has garnered many responses from ojol drivers, the majority naturally hope it will truly be realised. However, on the other hand, what will be the impact felt by users and app operators? However, he assessed that lowering the commission cap needs to be studied comprehensively to avoid disrupting the sustainability of the online transportation ecosystem. He explained that the online transportation industry is a complex ecosystem because it must maintain a balance between people’s purchasing power, service tariffs, and driver partners’ income. The company is concerned that overly restrictive interventions could shift that balance, ultimately leading to significant consequences for the overall industry sustainability. “Therefore, we encourage a comprehensive strategic review of the policy to ensure that the online transportation industry climate remains conducive, sustainable, and inclusive for all levels of society,” he said in an official statement received by Kompas.com on Tuesday (6/5/2026).
