Mayor of Medan Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas attended the Labour Day (May Day) commemoration in Medan on Friday (1/5). The event, held at Pardede Hall, was filled with joy and camaraderie, attended by hundreds to thousands of workers from various sectors.

The celebratory atmosphere became even more lively as Rico Waas mingled and sang along with the thousands of workers filling the venue. The programme also included tumpeng cutting, lucky draw prize distributions, and the handover of 1,100 food aid packages to the workers.

In addition, the event was attended by members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), including the Medan Police Chief and the Commander of Kodim 0201/Medan, demonstrating cross-sectoral support for the Labour Day commemoration in Medan.

In his speech, Rico affirmed that workers are the main pillar in driving the wheels of the economy and development. Therefore, he committed to safeguarding the fulfilment of workers’ rights, from job certainty and labour protection to the implementation of a fair wage system.

The Medan City Government, he continued, is also promoting synergy between the government, entrepreneurs, and labour unions through ongoing dialogue. This is reinforced by 10 strategic commitment points, including oversight of normative rights and efforts to establish a decent regional minimum wage.

Carrying the theme ‘One Determination, One Goal, Prosperity Together’, the commemoration attended by around 1,000 participants also served as a space for workers to voice their aspirations to the government.

May Day 2026 was concluded with a call to maintain conduciveness and strengthen collaboration to realise ‘Medan for All, All for Medan’.
