Rice Fields in Java and South Sulawesi Hit by Drought, Government Steps In

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — The Ministry of Agriculture has revealed that a number of key farming regions are beginning to feel the effects of the dry season. Several spots in Java and South Sulawesi have reportedly experienced drought, although the condition has not yet spread evenly.

Hermanto, Director General of Agricultural Land and Irrigation at the ministry, said that based on mapping carried out by his office, symptoms of drought have begun to appear in several areas.

“Yes, several in Java, and in the east, in South Sulawesi, there are several spots that have started to dry out,” Hermanto said when met at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Monday (27/7/2026).

He also confirmed reports that paddy fields in the Jonggol area had begun to experience drought. However, according to him, the condition remains localised and has not spread across the entire area.

“Yes, it’s true (Jonggol has started to dry out). So indeed… but it’s not comprehensive, though there are indeed several spots where drought is occurring,” he said.

To anticipate the impact of drought on agricultural production, the ministry is working to distribute water pumps to channel water from the nearest available sources. In addition, boreholes are being used at a number of locations.

“We are trying to help, wherever the nearest water source is that we can channel into the paddy fields. There are even places where it’s done through boreholes, bore wells like that,” Hermanto explained.

Meanwhile, for farmers beginning to be affected by the drought, Hermanto urged them to report promptly to their Field Agricultural Extension Officers (PPL). Such reports will then be coordinated through their respective regions so that handling measures can be taken immediately.

“Report to the PPL, and the PPL can then coordinate through the regional channels,” he concluded.
