Riau Regional Police (Polda Riau) has pioneered an innovative step to support the national food security program. In addition to boosting corn productivity, Polda Riau is also supporting farmer groups by insuring corn crops during the cultivation process.

This was stated by the Riau Police Chief, Inspector General of Police Herry Heryawan, while reporting to Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo at the event for the Simultaneous Corn Planting in Quarter I of 2026. The Chief attended the event virtually in Sialang Indah Village, Pangkalan Kuras District, Pelalawan Regency, on Saturday 7 March 2026.

‘This year, Polda Riau is making an innovative breakthrough by insuring corn crops to protect income and mitigate losses for farmers caused by constraints during cultivation,’ said Irjen Pol Herry Heryawan.

In his report, the Chief stated that they have explored collaborations with several insurance companies to develop an ecosystem-based corn agricultural insurance scheme. ‘One of the requirements is that the insured farmers must be assisted by agronomists—specifically the Police’s Special Competence Sergeants (Bakomsus)—to ensure the application of Good Agricultural Practices,’ he added.

The Bakomsus Police support is intended to strengthen optimism in reaching the targets. Polda Riau currently has 21 Bakomsus in agriculture, recruited under the programme initiated by the Chief of Police as part of the Presidency’s Asta Cita commitment.

In addition to protecting corn farming, Polda Riau is developing high-quality local corn varieties and organic fertilisers through research conducted by Bakomsus at the Green Harmony Tube laboratory (Tabung Harmoni Hijau) owned by Polda Riau. This effort is undertaken to boost the production of quality corn. ‘This is to anticipate the prolonged dry season in 2026,’ he said.

To raise productivity, farming groups are supported with equipment and machinery, including two tractors, twelve manual planting tools, one soil tiller, soil pH meters, and support for the Bhayangkara FertiPlus Amino Grow fertiliser to improve growth and productivity of corn.

Polda Riau has also prepared a harvest storage warehouse in Sialang Indah Village as a facility to manage production. The warehouse has a capacity of up to 110 tonnes.

Target planting in 2026: In Quarter I 2026, Polda Riau carried out simultaneous corn planting across all cities/districts in the province, covering a total planted area of 378.50 hectares with a potential area of 7,355.29 hectares. As of 4 March 2026, land planted with corn reached 1,103.30 hectares, representing 80 per cent of the Q1 2026 target of 1,456.26 hectares.

Based on verifications from the district police, the corn land in the Polda Riau region has reached 7,355.29 hectares, thereby substantially meeting the maximum target set in the Polri’s guidelines (Jukrah) for the 2026 corn food security program. This achievement demonstrates a significant increase compared with Q1 2025, which realised only 518.91 hectares, reflecting the commitment and synergy of Polda Riau with local government, farmer groups, and the private sector in supporting the national self-sufficiency in food program.
