Riau Police Equip 70 Policewomen with Public Speaking and Negotiation Skills
Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan continues to encourage the improvement of capacity and professionalism among policewomen in his ranks. One of the ways is by providing training to enhance public speaking and negotiation skills.
The training, organised by the Human Resources Bureau of the Riau Regional Police, was attended by 70 policewomen on 4–5 August 2026. The activity featured several speakers, including Linda Nur Lestari, SE, CMT.
Head of the Riau Police Human Resources Bureau, Senior Commissioner Boy Jeckson Situmorang, said the activity is part of a competency improvement programme for policewomen that has received the attention of the Riau Police Chief. As the daily supervisor of policewomen, Commissioner Boy also encouraged the implementation of the programme as an effort to improve the quality of policewomen’s human resources, particularly in communication skills, self-confidence and service to the public.
The training is also part of the Riau Police Human Resources Bureau’s commitment to supporting the Riau Police Chief’s programme in improving personnel quality. Through continuous development, policewomen are expected to become more professional, confident and capable of being effective communicators in society.
With improved public speaking skills, policewomen are expected not only to appear as professional figures in carrying out police duties, but also to be able to represent a humane, communicative and community-oriented Indonesian National Police.
During the training, participants not only received theoretical instruction but also took part in practical exercises and roleplay activities to hone their communication skills in various situations encountered on duty. The materials provided included speaking and behaviour techniques for policewomen acting as negotiators when dealing with the public during demonstrations, techniques for speaking in front of cameras and on social media, impactful communication and public speaking, as well as communication practice through simulations.
On the first day, the training was attended by 35 policewomen from Pekanbaru City Police, the Samapta Directorate, the Vital Objects Protection Directorate, the General Criminal Investigation Directorate, the Traffic Directorate, the Community Guidance Directorate, the Integrated Police Service Centre and the Public Relations Division of the Riau Regional Police. The same number of participants attended the training on the second day.
Riau Police Policewomen Coordinator, Assistant Commissioner Vera Taurensa, said the training is part of the Riau Police Chief’s programme to improve the capacity and competency of policewomen.
“This is one of the Riau Police Chief’s programmes to improve the capacity and competency of policewomen. Public speaking is very important because policewomen in carrying out their duties come into direct contact with the public and are required to be able to communicate well in various situations,” Vera said in a statement on Wednesday (5/8/2026).
According to Vera, communication skills are needed not only when policewomen provide services to the public, but also when facing situations that require negotiation skills, information delivery or communication through the media.
“Policewomen must be able to speak calmly, humanely, confidently and accurately. Whether when providing services, dealing with the public, conducting negotiations during demonstrations, or when conveying information through cameras and social media,” she explained.
She added that the use of practical and roleplay methods is an important part of the training because participants can directly practise the communication techniques they have learned.
