Riau Police Chief Welcomes Birth of Baby Elephant in Tesso Nilo: New Hope for Conservation
A Sumatran elephant calf has been born in the Tesso Nilo National Park conservation area, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province. The birth of the baby elephant was joyfully welcomed by Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan. Inspector General Herry Heryawan stated that the birth of the Sumatran elephant calf to mother Mama Ria provides new hope for the world of conservation. “This birth not only increases the population of this protected species but also brings new hope for the sustainability of Sumatran elephants in their natural habitat,” said Inspector General Herry Heryawan, as quoted from his Instagram account on Wednesday (10/6/2026). The Riau Police Chief expressed deep gratitude for the birth of this female elephant. Amidst the various complex challenges currently faced by wildlife, ranging from the threat of poaching to shrinking forest areas, the birth of this baby elephant carries a strong moral message for all parties. “Alhamdulillah, good news comes from Tesso Nilo National Park. Amidst the various challenges facing wildlife, every birth is a message that nature is still giving us the opportunity to improve, protect, and preserve it,” added Herry Heryawan. The birth of this baby elephant also encourages the Riau Police to continue supporting conservation efforts and nature protection through the spirit of Green Policing. “The Riau Police, through the spirit of Green Policing, continues to support conservation efforts, biodiversity protection, and the rescue of the Sumatran elephant habitat in Bumi Lancang Kuning,” he said. The two-star general hopes that the baby elephant can continue to grow and become an important part of Tesso Nilo’s future. “Welcome, little baby elephant. May you grow healthy, strong, and one day become an important part of Tesso Nilo’s future,” he said. The birth of the baby elephant to Mama Ria was announced by the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency today. The birth of this baby elephant makes Mama Ria’s total offspring six, after Tesso, Tino, Harmoni Rimbo, and Domang.
