Riau Pilgrim Dies in Batam After Returning from Hajj, Total Deaths Reach 12
Pekanbaru (ANTARA) - A hajj pilgrim from Riau, Darmanto, who was part of the BTH 03 flight group from Pekanbaru, has died at the Awal Bros Botania Hospital in Batam, Riau Islands, after receiving medical treatment upon his return from Makkah.
The Head of the Riau Provincial Office of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, Defizon, stated that the deceased arrived in Indonesia via the Batam Hajj Embarkation Airport on 4 June 2026. He subsequently underwent intensive care at the hospital until he passed away on Sunday (14/6), accompanied by his wife, Sukarelawati, and family.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. On behalf of myself and the entire family of the Riau Provincial Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. Darmanto,” he said in Pekanbaru on Monday.
Defizon explained that because the deceased died while still in the debarkation service process in Batam, he is entitled to the rights of a deceased pilgrim according to applicable regulations, including insurance compensation and Zamzam water.
As of 14 June 2026, the total number of pilgrims from Riau who have died during the 1447 H/2026 Hajj season stands at 12. Of these, one died in Medina, seven in Makkah, two in Batam before departing for the Holy Land, one in their home region before departure, and the latest case is a pilgrim who died in Batam after completing the pilgrimage and arriving back in Indonesia.
