Riau Conservation Agency Installs Trap Cages After Two Killed in Tiger Attacks

Pekanbaru, (ANTARA) - The Natural Resources Conservation Centre (BBKSDA) of Riau Province has installed two trap cages after two people were reported killed in tiger attacks at the Industrial Forest Plantation (HTI) area of Sungai Ara Village, Pelalawan District, Pelalawan Regency.

Acting Head of BBKSDA Riau, Laskar Jaya Permana, said that according to the mitigation team’s report, the tiger that attacked the victims is suspected to be the same individual responsible for the previous attack. The animal is estimated to be male and around three years old.

“The preliminary conclusion was obtained from the examination of tracks in the field, which have the same size and characteristics. However, identification is still ongoing to confirm whether it is indeed the same individual,” he said in Pekanbaru on Monday.

It is understood that after killing a 12-year-old boy, the Sumatran tiger claimed the life of a man named Eko Prasetyo (29). The incident occurred on Friday night (10/7) at a second camp located about 6.5 kilometres from the site of the first attack.

“Part of the victim’s body had also been eaten by the tiger,” he said.

Previously, the first victim of the Sumatran tiger attack in the area was JZ (12), the child of an HTI worker living in the same camp. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday (7/7).

JZ was reportedly attacked while waiting for his older sibling to wash dishes at the washroom behind the camp. The victim’s sibling heard his screams, but when he was found around 10 metres from the camp, the victim had severe wounds to the neck and was pronounced dead after being taken to a health facility.
