Riau BBKSDA installs Sumatran tiger monitoring cameras in PT PHR area
Pekanbaru - The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) has installed monitoring cameras (camera traps) at strategic points to track the presence of a Sumatran tiger reported sighted in the area of PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR).
The Head of the Technical Division of BBKSDA Riau, Ujang Holisudin, stated that based on identification from the circulating video source, the animal is indeed an adult Sumatran tiger.
“The team has conducted aerial monitoring documentation using a drone as well as coordinate points as a basis for further mitigation actions,” he said in Pekanbaru on Tuesday.
He mentioned receiving a report from PT PHR on Sunday (5/4) regarding the appearance of a Sumatran tiger. The exact location is at DSF 125 Tonggak 8, Duri Field, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province.
“A team consisting of BBKSDA Riau personnel and PT PHR security jointly carried out mitigation and field identification. During the field inspection process, the team heard the tiger’s roar near the initial encounter location,” he revealed.
As a precautionary measure for safety and to avoid physical contact, the team decided to move approximately 500 metres from the sound source to conduct further monitoring.
“The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency has also deployed a medical team as a precautionary measure for emergency conditions to stand by with the field team and will continue to coordinate with PT PHR and conduct risk assessments for wildlife conflicts as efforts to determine further actions and mitigation,” he said.
