KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Malaysia has relaxed its freeze on the
hiring of Indonesian workers by hiring 3,000 for its booming
electronics industry, the state news agency Bernama reported
yesterday.
The electronics sector, which brings in about 30 billion
ringgit (US$11.7 billion) in sales annually, employs around
200,000 workers.
Malaysia faces a labor shortage following six years of rapid
economic growth. But it stopped recruiting Indonesians after
thousands of illegal workers slipped into the country in recent
years.
There is an estimated one million Indonesians in Malaysia, of
which about half are illegals. Most are employed in the
plantation, construction and domestic help sectors.
