RI woman gets life in Pakistan for drugs
An Indonesian woman has been sentenced to life in prison in Pakistan for trying to smuggle heroin to the United Arab Emirates, her lawyer said on Saturday.
Linda Dharmayanthi, 24, from Jakarta, who had pleaded not guilty, was also fined one million rupees (US$16,500) on Friday by a court in the southern city of Multan.
Dharmayanthi was arrested at Multan airport in March after customs officers found seven kilograms of heroin in her luggage. She was heading for Dubai.
Dharmayanthi's lawyer said she had pleaded not guilty and claimed the drugs were planted. She can appeal to the provincial High Court.
Multan, in Punjab province, is famous for its tombs of Muslim sufi saints and artisans. -- Reuters
