RI to host antiterrorism meeting

JAKARTA: Southeast Asian police chiefs would meet in Indonesia
this month to discuss terrorism, drugs and transnational crimes,
an official said Wednesday.

National police spokesman Zainuri Lubis said the three-day
meeting starting Jan. 20 would be attended by police chiefs and
representatives from the 10 members of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"Because the terrorism issue is currently under the world
spotlight, it will become one of the main focuses of the
workshop," Lubis said.

He said speakers from the region as well as from Australia,
the United States and from Germany had confirmed their
attendance.

ASEAN police chiefs normally meet every year, Lubis said.

Police investigating the Oct. 12 Bali bombing which killed
more than 190 people are still seeking 11 people including two
Malaysians. They have 15 suspects in custody.

The blast is widely blamed on the Jamaah Islamiyah regional
terror group, many of whose members have been detained in
Malaysia and Singapore. --AFP
