RI to conduct underwater research

JAKARTA: A group of experts from Indonesia, Japan, Germany and France will conduct pioneering underwater research in the country's waters in October, the team's coordinator, Sidik Mulyono, said on Tuesday.

"So far there has not been any such research carried out in the deep waters off Indonesia," he said.

Sidik, a researcher from the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), said the research would be carried out in the Java Sea, in waters off southern Lampung, the Sunda Straits and southwestern Java.

The expedition is expected to reveal many deep sea mysteries, he said.

Sidik added that the researchers, comprising four Indonesians, four Japanese, three Germans and one Frenchman, will board a submarine capable of diving to a depth of 6,500 meters. -- Antara
