RI takes single and doubles titles
JAKARTA (JP): Local tennis buffs got a boost over the weekend when favorites Peter Handoyo and the women's pair of Liza Andriani and Wynne Prakusya romped home with the boy's singles and the women's doubles crowns yesterday.
Playing under the watchful gaze of their boss, Sarwono Kusumaatmadja -- the Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) chief -- Peter, seeded 13th, grabbed his first major victory in an international tournament by beating Briton Simon Dickson 6-1, 6-1 in 56 minutes.
The international junior tennis championships held at the Hilton tennis courts were organized by Astra International and sanctioned by the ITF and Pelti.
First seed women's doubles Liza and Wyne had no trouble beating South Korean Yoon Hyung-mi and Lim Sun-young 6-3, 6-4.
A baseliner himself, Peter forced his opponent to play the baselines from the onset without giving the Briton a chance to take control of the match.
The 15-year-old Dickson stole a point in the first set but later fell to Peter, who cruised his way to a 6-1 finish.
In the second set, Peter scored three times in a row, giving up only one point to Dickson.
Dickson, who beat first seed Bhee Whitoonpanich of Thailand in the semifinals, failed to stop Peter on his way to winning the second set 6-1.
"I don't know what was wrong with him or why he made so many errors," Peter said of his opponent.
"Since the beginning I tried to press him and not give him a chance to take control," he added.
Indonesian home favorites Liza and Wynne defeated the South Korean duo 6-3 in the first set.
In the second set, Liza and Wynne had to struggle as their opponents tried hard not to lose any points to the host.
Trailing 2-0 in the second set, Yoon and Lim came back to even the score at 2-2. The South Koreans then took over the lead 3-2 before Liza and company made it 3-3.
The Koreans went up 4-3 when Liza's return shot went too long. But Yoon's double fault equalized the score at 4-4.
Putting more pressure on their counterparts, Liza and Wynne forced spectators to hold their breath before they managed to complete the second set 6-4.
In the women's singles, Anastasia Myskina won 7-5, 6-1 against teammate Elena Dementieva in an all-Russian final yesterday. Dementieva dashed Liza's single title dream after the Russian beat her in the semifinal 6-3, 6-4.
Runner-up Dickson and fellow countrywoman Daniel Kiernan took the mixed doubles title after beating Slovenian duo Miha Gregorc and Tomaz Berendijas 6-3, 7-5. (05)
