RI, Singapore discuss water supply

JAKARTA: The governments of Indonesian and Singapore have
intensified talks on a plan to export water from Riau to the city
state.

Director General of Water Resources at the Ministry of
Resettlement and Regional Infrastructure Roestam Sjarief said on
Wednesday the two governments had focused on technical and legal
matters in the plan.

"The negotiation has been intensified due to a huge demand for
water in Singapore, who is looking for alternative water
suppliers other than Malaysia," he said.

The Indonesian government and the House of Representatives are
now deliberating on the water resources bill, of which one
article allows the government to sell water to a foreign country.
