RI seeks Thai rice

BANGKOK (Reuter): Deputy Thai Prime Minister Amnuay Virawan said yesterday Indonesia has proposed to buy Thai rice under a countertrade deal whereby Jakarta will sell Bangkok aircraft for agricultural purposes.

Amnuay said Indonesia builds such aircraft with Spanish technology. He gave no further details on the quantity of rice sought nor the value of the deal and aircraft.

Thai officials said the Indonesian proposal was made during a recent visit to Jakarta by a Thai delegation led by Agriculture Minister Suvit Khunkitti.

They said a bilateral Thai-Chinese trade commission is also expected to discuss in May a proposal by Thai Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa for China to buy an additional 200,000- 300,000 tons of Thai rice.

They said Banharn made the proposal during his visit to China late last month.
