RI scholar receives award
FUKUOKA, Japan (Kyodo): Leading Indonesian anthropologist
Koentjaraningrat has been named the grand prize winner for the
Sixth Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize for meritorious work in the
development of Asian scholarship and culture.
The 72-year-old University of Indonesia professor emeritus is
his country's leading cultural anthropologist in the area of
traditional Southeast Asian culture and is highly regarded for
his research in development and modernization.
Koentjaraningrat will receive 5 million yen as the grand prize
winner during a ceremony to be held on Sept. 28 in Fukuoka.
The international scholarship prize was awarded to Hahn Ki Un,
70, professor emeritus at Seoul National University of South
Korea for his work in educating a number of respected scholars in
the area of educational philosophy.
The domestic scholarship prize went to internationally
recognized authority on South Asia, Noboru Karashima, 62, of
Taisho University.
The award for art and culture went to Korean-American Nam June
Paik, 62, for the artist's work in the area of video art.
The scholarship and art prizes carry an award of 3 million yen
each.
