RI, Romania to sign MOU

JAKARTA: Indonesia and Romania are to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the field of science and technology.

Romanian Ambassador to Indonesia George Savuica said over the weekend that the MOU was a follow-up to last month's visit by President Megawati Soekarnoputri to Romania.

Savuica said both sides were discussing the details of the MOU, which could not be signed during Megawati's visit due to a lack of preparation.

He declined to divulge the contents of the memorandum of understanding, saying only that it was part of the MOUs signed during the President's visit to Romania.

Megawati visited Romania from April 18 through April 20, during which her entourage signed five MOUs dealing with foreign affairs, trade, electricity, banking and the textile business.

The MOU on foreign affairs was signed by foreign ministers of both countries, the MOU on trade affairs by the National Agency for Export Development (BPEN) and Romanian Foreign Trade Center, the electricity MOU by state electricity company PLN and SC Romelectro SA, the banking MOU by Bank Mandiri and Romania's Eximbank, and the textile MOU was signed by PT Texmaco and SC Uzuc SA.

Both countries also signed one letter of intent (loi) on scientific and technological cooperation.

The two countries also agreed to encourage cooperation in education, science, culture, art, health and social institutions as well as mass media organizations. --JP
