RI needs Rp2,000 trillion in foreign investment annually
Nusadua, Bali (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said Indonesia needs foreign investment totaling Rp2,000 trillion annually with half of the amount expected to come from Japan.
"I hope half of the investment funds will come from Japan, and the rest from other countries," the head of state said at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama here on Thursday.
Yudhoyono officially opened the Bali Democracy Forum here on Thursday morning. The Indonesian president and the Japanese prime minister are joint chairmen of the two-day forum.
Indonesia and Japan had opportunities to cooperate in various sectors, including the energy sector, both conventional and renewable, he said.
Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa and Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojori signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on the Japanese assistance for e development in Indonesia at Nusa Dua, Thursday, on the sidelines of the Democracy Forum.
The Japanese government has provided funds for construction of bridges on Nias Island (North Sumatra Province) and in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, as well as a loan for economic stimulus to deal with climate change.
"Nias will get Rp220 billion for the building of several bridges," Yudhoyono said.
To address climate change, the Japanese government has given its commitment to provide a loan of Rp4 trillion.
Meanwhile, Kazuo Kodama, spokesman of the Japanese Directorate General of the Press and Public Relations, said Japan provided 1.5 billion Yen for the constructions of bridges on Nias Island, and 492 million Yen for bridge constructions in NTB.
"On Nias Island, six earthquake-proof bridges will be built," he said.While on Sumbawa Island, NTB Province, four bridges will be constructed.
The assistance was the first part of a program called "Hatoyama Initiative, he said.
He said around 9.4 billion Yen would be provided to Indonesia through a Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA)`s Emergency Budget Support Program.(*)
