The Industry Ministry says that the country's manufacturing industry grew by 4.3 percent in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period last year, thanks to the steady performance of non-oil and gas manufacturing sector.
Industry Minister M.S. Hidayat said Tuesday that non-oil and gas manufacturing sub-sector grew by 4.9 percent in the period, while the oil and gas manufacturing was down by 2.6 percent due to a 7 percent decrease in the country's natural gas production.
βIn non-oil and gas sub-sector, carrier, machine and component industries recorded a 12.2 percent growth, the highest in the sub-sector,β he told a press conference at his office in Jakarta.
The ministry's data also shows that fertilizer, chemical and rubber products industries also grow by 3.1 percent, followed by cement and non-metal mining goods industries by 2.4 percent.
However, the data records a 0.1 percent decline in textile, leather and footwear products.
Hidayat said the manufacturing industry contributed 1.1 percent to the country's 6.2 percent growth in the second quarter, the second highest below the trade, hotel and restaurant sectors that contributed 1.6 percent to the economic growth.
βI hope that in the upcoming years, our manufacturing industry growth could resemble the economic growth. The expected growth will be between 6 and 7 percent per year,β he said.
Given the current trend, he projected that the country's manufacturing industry might grow by 4.9 percent this year and hit 6 percent next year. (rdf)
