RI, Malaysian navies hold joint exercise

BATAM, Riau Islands: The navies of Indonesia and Malaysia are holding a coordinated patrol in waters off Riau Islands as part of their joint efforts to combat terrorism in the Strait of Malacca.

Around 560 personnel and eight warships belonging to the two navies will be involved in the five-day annual exercise, which will conclude on Friday.

Indonesian Navy Western Fleet chief of staff Commodore Moekhlas Sidiq said the two navies would improve their capabilities in combating sea crimes, including terrorist attacks that could target vessels passing through one of the world's most busiest waterways.

The Malaysian navy has deployed KD Jebat, KD Mahawangsa, KD Perdana and KD Mustary warships for the joint exercise. -- JP
