RI, Malaysia to hold joint exercises

ENPASAR, Bali: The Indonesian and Malaysian military agreed on Tuesday to hold joint exercises in the Malacca Strait to counter piracy and threats of terrorism there.

Spokesman for the Indonesian Military Lt. Col. Ahmad Yani Basuki said the two neighboring countries were serious in tackling security issues in the strait.

The Indonesian delegation was led by Maj. Gen. Adam Damiri, while the Malaysian counterpart was led by Brig. Gen. Dato Kamarrozaman bin Mohammad Syarief.

Yani said the purpose of the joint exercises was to ensure that any foreign fleet passing through the strait observed proper procedures. -- JP
