RI-Malaysia extradition deal

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP): Malaysia and Indonesia on
Saturday agreed to consider widening their extradition agreement
to allow for frequent prisoner exchanges.

Malaysia's minister in the prime minister's department Rais
Yatim was quoted as saying by the national news agency Bernama
that officials would review the agreement signed in 1976 to pave
way for more exchanges, especially on humanitarian grounds.

That would allow prisoners to serve their sentences in their
own country and enable their relatives to visit them, he told a
news conference.

The two sides reached the agreement during a meeting between
Rais and Indonesian Justice Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra.

"We can do this within the ASEAN countries on a more
comprehensive basis especially between Malaysia and Indonesia,"
said Rais.
