RI maid tortured in Malaysia
JAKARTA (JP): The government has left a Malaysian court to
handle the case of an Indonesian housemaid that was brutally
burned and tortured by an Irishman and his Malaysian wife near
Kuala Lumpur.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Manpower Fachri Taharuddin said
yesterday that Indonesia, through its embassy in Kuala Lumpur,
has asked Malaysia to handle the case in accordance with its
laws.
"We have received a report from the Indonesian Embassy in
Kuala Lumpur that the case has been brought to court," he told
The Jakarta Post.
Fallon Finber, a 36-year-old Irishman, and his wife Ashrina
Majid, 29, have been charged with scalding the private parts of
their maid, Rohani Bin Sumie, 30, with a hot iron and boiling
water.
The court in Shah Alam released the couple this week on 15,000
Malaysian dollars (ringgit) bail and seized their passports. They
are facing up to 20 years in prison.
Rohani, 25, from East Java, is reportedly undergoing medical
treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Rohimah in Kelang, 30 kilometers
west of Kuala Lumpur. (rms)
