RI maid jailed for false rape report

SINGAPORE: An Indonesian maid who lied when she claimed to have been raped was sentenced to two weeks in a Singapore jail, it was reported on Tuesday.

Wiyati Sarmo, 22, told investigators she thought the lie would somehow speed up her return to her homeland.

The woman told police last week she was raped at her employer's block by two men who forced her to drink beer and used a knife to cut her pants.

A medical examination showed she had not been raped.

"It was a serious allegation," said Magistrate Chong Kah Wei on Monday, "but it was not directed at anyone."

Wiyati, like all foreign workers convicted of a crime here, will be sent back home after her jail term ends. -- DPA
