KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): A Malaysian housewife accused of hitting
and seriously injuring her Indonesian maid with a rock has
publicly apologised and paid compensation to settle the case,
reports said on Friday.

It was the second time in less than a month that a local
employer had settled an assault case with an apology and cash
payment.

There has been a series of reported attacks on Indonesian
maids this year, sparking concern among many Malaysians.

In the latest incident a court in the northern city of Ipoh
acquitted Cheah Lai Mooi on a charge of causing grievous hurt to
Kusiah Manjian, Friday's newspapers and Bernama news agency
reported.

Cheah, 44, who could have faced up to seven years' jail,
agreed to pay an undisclosed sum in compensation to Manjian, 32,
and gave her a letter of apology.
