RI lowest milk consumer in ASEAN

GARUT, West Java: The consumption rate of dairy milk for
Indonesians amounts to only six liters per capita per month,
making them the poorest milk consumers in ASEAN (Association of
Southeast Asian Nations), an official said on Thursday.

"Ideally, we should drink 120 liters per capita monthly," Tri
Satya Putri N.H., director for livestock development at the
Ministry of Agriculture, said on the sidelines of a workshop on
livestock development ventures here.

She said that 70 percent of the milk demand in the country was
fulfilled by imported products.

Tri said that even in the next 10 years, Indonesia would be
unlikely to export dairy milk, because its production was limited
and was only suitable for domestic consumption.

"However, demand for milk here will increase," she said. --
