RI leads 3-0 in Fed Cup

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia led 3-0 over Pacific Oceania in the first day of the Fed Cup Asia Oceania Group One qualifying match at the Yang Min tennis center in Kao Hsiung, Taiwan, on Monday.

Indonesia's No. 2 singles Romana Tedjakusuma opened the spree by defeating Nicole Angat 6-0, 6-0 in the first match. National top singles Wynne Prakusya followed her senior's path by overcoming Davilyn Godinet 6-0, 6-3.

The partnership of veteran Yayuk Basuki and junior Wukirasih Sawondari sealed the team's victory by overpowering Angat and Godinet 6-2, 6-2.

Indonesia, top seeded here, is in pool A with Pacific Oceania, New Zealand, South Korea and India. Indonesia will play New Zealand on Tuesday. The Cup will end on April 14 and the champion of each pool will advance to a final play-off round.

The winner will proceed to the World Group Relegation Ties to be played on a home and away basis in July to decide which teams will face relegation and promotion to the 2002 World Group. (ivy)
