RI juniors to 2nd round in World C'ships

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian shuttlers reached the next round of the individual events in the World Junior Badminton Championships for the Bimantara Cup in Guangzhou, China, on Tuesday.

Taufik Hidayat had no trouble defeating Ching Feng Liao of Macao 7-5, 7-0, 7-0. Taufik will meet Gijs van Heijster of the Netherlands, who beat Dennis von Dahn of Sweden 7-2, 7-3, 8-6.

Another Indonesian boys singles Ardi Ardiansah also reached the second round after overwhelming Eric Go of the United States 7-1, 7-1, 7-3. Ardi will face Sheng-Ming Chin of Chinese Taipei, who ousted Rafal Hawel of Poland 7-4, 7-3, 7-3.

Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Anggun Nugroho received byes in the first round. Sony is scheduled to meet Thiraya Laohathaimongkon of Thailand, who also received a bye. While Anggun will meet Egor Ursatii of Moldova. Ursatii also got a bye in the first round.

In the girls singles, Silvi Antarini reached the second round after overwhelming Tsz Wai Tang of Hong Kong 8-6, 7-0, 7-0. Silvi will challenge Mie Nielsen of Denmark, who defeated Laura McKerrall of Canada 7-3, 8-7, 7-0.

Dian Novita was the only player to make an early exit as she lost to Agnese Allegrini of Italy 2-7, 8-6, 0-7, 2-7. Allegrini will face Shu Lin of China, who beat Susan Wang of Australia 5-7, 7-0, 7-2, 7-4.

Mona Santoso and Dewi Tira received byes in the first round.

Boys doubles Markis Kidho and Hendra A Gunawan beat Brandon Kot and Tye Reidie of Canada 7-2, 7-3, 7-1. Compatriots Yan Pieter and Tri Heru Pamungkas received a bye in the first round.

The championships -- which are being used by the International Badminton Federation (IBF) to experiment with a new scoring system comprising of seven points in a game and a best of five games -- will conclude on Nov. 12. (yan)
