RI joins Korean energy plan
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has agreed to join the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) to help supply North Korea with alternative energy sources as it replaces its graphite based reactors with light water ones which produce less grade plutonium.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas formally conveyed Jakarta's willingness to participate in a letter to his Japanese, South Korean and United States on Jan. 5, 1996.
KEDO was formed by the U.S., South Korea and Japan on March 9, 1995.
Though it is unclear how Indonesia would contribute, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large Robert Gallucci has said that "Indonesia is in a position to help with heavy fuel oil." (mds)
