Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Indonesian hotel occupancy during Ramadan 2026 tends to decline. Maulana Yusran, Secretary General of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), said hotel occupancy during Ramadan typically remains subdued, with this year’s rate hovering around 30-40%.

“During Ramadan, hotels are generally quiet or have low occupancy; at present it is around 30-40%,” Maulana told CNBC Indonesia, on Thursday (5 March 2026).

In some areas, occupancy has been as low as 10%.

“There are even cases that are particularly low, such as in Yogyakarta, where occupancy was only 10% during Ramadan,” he added.

Nevertheless, he expressed hope that during Idul Fitri 2026 hotel occupancy could rise in line with increased tourist visits. Maulana explained that the occupancy rebound typically occurs on the second day after Idul Fitri.

“If we look at the trend, the increase generally occurs on the second day after Idul Fitri, when people usually start travelling,” he said.

Middle East Conflict Escalation Not Yet Affecting

Toward the middle of Ramadan, escalation in the Middle East has grown due to the conflict between Iran and the United States (US) and Israel. This has forced would-be Umrah pilgrims intending to perform the pilgrimage during Ramadan to hold back.

However, he said there has not yet been any direct or indirect impact from the escalation.

“There has not been any impact yet; hotels remain relatively quiet at present, as Ramadan is normally a quiet period,” he said.

Yusran explained that hotels had not yet felt the impact of the postponement of Umrah departures because usually Umrah pilgrims staying at hotels are organised by travel agents.

“There hasn’t been any impact because the Umrah pilgrims are usually arranged by agents who are partners of the hotels where they stay,” he added.
