RI Govt to consider MSME conditions in halal certification

Abdurrahman said smaller businesses face limitations that require consideration, adding that those which have not completed certification would not necessarily be excluded from the process.

He said medium- and large-scale businesses generally have stronger capital and greater familiarity with regulations, while micro and small businesses face greater constraints.

The government would therefore consider different approaches when enforcing the certification requirement, Abdurrahman said, without elaborating on specific measures.

His ministry had previously said it would prepare policies to ease the burden on MSMEs facing the mandatory halal certification requirement.

The Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) offers a self-declare certification scheme designed to simplify the process for micro and small businesses.

Abdurrahman said the self-declare policy was one measure intended to ease the certification process for the micro and small business sector.

Mandatory halal certification will take effect on Oct. 18, 2026, for food and beverage products and food-service businesses, including restaurants.
