RI Govt prepares WIM technology for zero ODOL in 2027

Coordinating Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said WIM facilities will be installed at strategic locations, including industrial zones and routes linking ports with industrial areas.

“We have to make sure that before a truck moves from one point to another, for example, from a port to an industrial area, weighing equipment is in place,” he said here Wednesday.

WIM technology will form part of government efforts to ensure freight vehicles comply with prescribed size and weight standards, Yudhoyono said.

The zero-ODOL policy aims to reduce traffic accidents involving oversized or overloaded vehicles while limiting damage to roads and other infrastructure.

Yudhoyono said ODOL vehicles are a major contributor to road damage, forcing the government to allocate substantial funds for repairs and preservation.

The government spends more than Rp40 trillion (about US$2.2 billion) annually to repair roads damaged by overloaded trucks, he said.

Reducing ODOL vehicles is expected to improve road safety while extending the useful life of roads and other transport infrastructure, Yudhoyono said.

The government is also assessing the potential impact of zero ODOL on transportation costs and the smooth distribution of goods, he said.

Yudhoyono said the government is pursuing a broader transformation of land transport, including shifting some freight from roads to railways.

About 80 percent of freight currently moves by road. Shifting some cargo to rail is expected to ease pressure on roads while maintaining efficient logistics distribution.
