The emergence of long queues for petroleum fuel (BBM) in several regions is attracting attention from the automotive industry, particularly the electric vehicle sector. This situation is seen as having the potential to encourage the public to consider alternative energy sources.

Budi Setiyadi, Chairman of the Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (AISMOLI), revealed that the phenomenon of fuel queues is starting to appear in some areas, one of which is in West Kalimantan. This condition is considered an early indicator of distribution disruptions.

“Now, from what I’ve followed on social media, in West Kalimantan the fuel queues are already quite long,” said Budi to CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (26/3/2026).

If this condition spreads to other areas, then changes in public behaviour could occur gradually.

“If that becomes more widespread in several regions, perhaps the public will start thinking about not using petrol motorcycles,” he stated.

Energy distribution conditions play an important role in shaping consumer decisions. When access to BBM becomes limited, electric vehicles could become an alternative choice.

“Well, perhaps as a replacement, the public could start looking at electric motorcycles,” he said.

This situation presents a momentum for the industry to increase education for the public regarding the benefits of electric vehicles.

“This could be a momentum to encourage and educate the public that if BBM is expensive or difficult to obtain, they can switch to electric motorcycles,” he explained.

Nevertheless, he emphasised that such a transition would not happen instantly. Industry readiness and consistent policy support from the government are required.

On the other hand, the industry is also undergoing consolidation to ensure preparedness in facing potential surges in demand.

His side will soon hold an internal meeting to discuss production capacity and infrastructure readiness. In addition, coordination with the government will be strengthened to ensure that the energy transition programme runs effectively.

He stressed that industry readiness must align with the direction of national policy for optimal impact.

“If indeed the direction is towards that, we are ready to support and be part of the solution,” he said.
