Indonesia's target of reaching the semifinals of the Southeast Asian U-17 Soccer Championship took a wrong turn on Saturday as it was beaten 0-1 by Laos at Teladan Stadium.

Playing in Group B, Laos' only goal was netted by Khmaphai Taypanyavong in the 75th minute, utilizing a pass from Sunthasine Phachumphon.

Indonesia had six opportunities to send the ball to the back of the Laotian net, guarded by Vongsackda Sianphongsay.

One wasted chance was when Putut Waringin Jati, who was dribbling the ball in Laos' penalty box, kicked a ball that was easily saved by Vongsackda.

Indonesia was also awarded six corner kicks.

Vietnamese referee Vo Minh Tri had to work hard to keep the lively match in order. He issued three yellow cards to Laos and the host got one.

Indonesia's coach Jim Bryden admitted his players were on top form, despite the disappointing result.

"They have played well but it turned out to be that the Laotians were better than us," said the foreign coach.

Meanwhile, Laotian coach Veunsavanh Sivisay said that his side had not won the match easily.

"The Indonesian players forced my boys to work hard but luckily we were playing without much pressure," he said.

"On the other hand, the Indonesians, although playing well, were hosts, so I think there was some added mental pressure to win the match," he added.

Indonesia is to play the Philippines on Monday and must win it to secure a place in the semifinals and final round in Kuala Lumpur on Feb. 28 and March 2.

Also playing Monday are Thailand against Cambodia at the Pardedetex Stadium.

Kuala Lumpur-based Group A pits host Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam.

Laos so far leads Group B with eight points, while Indonesia is third with four points.

Thailand is second also with four points, but has a better goal difference than Indonesia.

Indonesia defeated Thailand 2-1 last Tuesday and was held to a 0-0 draw by Cambodia.
