JAKARTA (JP): PT Angkasa Pura I, a state-own company operating nine airports throughout the country, plans to manage an airport in Guangzhou of China in cooperation with an Indonesian private firm.

Angkasa Pura I's spokesman, Aryadi Subagyo, told The Jakarta Post yesterday that the private company, PT Daya Mitra Ekasejati, recently asked his company to cooperate in managing the Chinese airport.

"Daya Mitra, which has won a tender to expand the airport in Guangzhou in cooperation with a French company, has asked Angkasa Pura I to manage the airport," he said. "We are still exchanging data with each other for further analysis."

He said that China became interested in Indonesia's airport management firm after considering several similarities between the two countries' business climates.

Aryadi also said that Angkasa Pura I has received applications from eight private firms for the construction of commercial facilities at some of its airports.

The airports managed by Angkasa Pura I are the Ngurah Rai airport in Bali, the Hasanudin in Ujungpandang of South Sulawesi, the Juanda in Surabaya of East Java, the Sepinggan in Balikpapan of East Kalimantan, the Frans Kaisiepo in Biak of Irian Jaya, the Sam Ratulangi in Manado of North Sulawesi, the Syamsudin Noor in Banjarmasin of South Kalimantan, the Adisucipto in Yogyakarta and the Adisumarmo in Surakarta of Central Java. The company is scheduled in April to manage three more airports -- the Pattimura in Ambon of Maluku, the Ahmad Yani in Semarang of Central Java and the Selaparang in Lombok of West Nusa Tenggara.

According to Aryadi, the eight projects include the development and management of commercial activities at Ngurah Rai, proposed by the Britain-based BAA Pacific with an investment of about US$45 million to $65 million, the expansion and management of Adi Sumarmo by PT Cipta Lamtoro Gung Persada with an investment of Rp 260 billion and the management of Juanda by PT Rhabasa Lintas Persada in cooperation with Bracknell Airport Development Corporation of Canada.

"Angkasa Pura I signed memoranda of understanding for the three proposals in late 1994. The applying companies are now conducting feasibility studies," he said.

Land

He said PT Sapta Kanaka is proposing to develop an office building and apartments on Angkasa Pura I's 10-hectare plot of land at Rawasari, Central Jakarta, under a build, operate and transfer scheme arrangement.

PT Ancol Timur Pratama and PT Intralindo Buana Persada have proposed the development of Angkasa Pura I's land in Jakarta and Bali respectively, he said.

Aryadi also said that PT Bavarindo TRA-BV and PT Bali Satwika have proposed to manage the Selaparang airport in Lombok and construct a lounge at the Ngurah Rai airport in Bali.

Meanwhile, to improve the skills of its personnel, Angkasa Pura I has signed cooperation agreements with two Australian parties, Perth Federal Airport Corporation and Civil Aviation Authority.

Under the agreements, the involved parties will exchange employees regularly and conduct training focusing on airport management, air traffic services and technical services.

He said such cooperation will also soon be established between Angkasa Pura I and the Narita airport of Japan.(icn)
