JAKARTA (JP): The governments of Indonesia and the People's Republic of China have agreed to exchange experiences and information for the development of the legal systems in both countries.
Attorney General Singgih and Beijing law official Zhang Siqing yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding for the cooperation as an effort to resolve legal matters between the two countries.
Under the agreement, senior government officers of the two prosecuting institutions represented at the signing could visit one another for a short study stint or take part in law courses and training.
The agreement also rules exchanges of materials and information for law enforcement, for cooperation in research and development, as well as cooperation in legal aid services.
Acting spokesman for the Attorney General's Office Chairul Imam said the signing of the memorandum will facilitate the litigation processes for criminal cases involving the two countries.
He said he will soon leave for China to a investigate possible connection between businessman Eddy Tansil, the man at the center of the Bapindo bank scandal, and Sinopec, a China-based machinery supplier for his petrochemical projects in Cilegon, West Java.
Relations
The diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China were resumed in 1990 after being frozen in 1967, two years after an abortive communist coup attempt in Indonesia.
China was accused of being behind the bid but denied any involvement.
The historic resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries was marked with the signing of a memorandum of understanding by Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas and his Chinese counterpart Qian Qichen here in October 1990.
The memorandum says neither the government of China nor that of Indonesia recognizes dual nationality for their nationals. People of Chinese origin residing in Indonesia, who have been naturalized as Indonesian nationals, or who have acquired Indonesian nationality, therefore, no longer possess Chinese nationality.
Similarly, those people of Indonesian origin residing in China, who have been naturalized as Chinese nationals, or who have acquired Chinese nationality, no longer possess Indonesian nationality.
The Chinese official is scheduled to leave Indonesia next Wednesday. (imn)
