RI awards Japanese police chief

JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri presented at Merdeka
Palace on Monday the Bhayangkara Utama award to Japan's National
Police chief Setsuo Tanaka for assisting Indonesia's National
Police force.

Accompanying the President during the award ceremony was
National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar and State
Secretary/Cabinet Secretary Bambang Kesowo.

Tanaka also made a visit to the National Police Headquarters
to sign a joint project between the two countries' National
Police forces.

The pilot project on the empowerment of civilian police
officers was carried out in the Bekasi Police precinct with the
help of Japanese police experts.

The President also presented a similar award to the chiefs of
the Malaysian and Singapore Police forces recently. --JP
