RI asks UN to follow up WSSD
NEW YORK: The government has asked United Nations Secretary-
General Kofi Annan to follow up on the outcome of the World
Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South
Africa, last September.
Indonesia's interim permanent representative to the UN Slamet
Hidayat said on Monday the follow-up should include a schedule of
WSSD sessions in the United Nations.
"The sessions are expected to coordinate the implementation of
the summit's result and to monitor the realization of partnership
cooperation issued by a number of countries and non-governmental
organizations at the WSSD's preparatory meeting in Bali and the
summit in Johannesburg," Slamet said.
He said Indonesia had requested that the Sustainable
Development Commission monitor the implementation of development
programs at regional, national and international levels.
Monitoring, according to him, should also be done on more than
100 partnerships in sustainable development declared by a number
of countries, including Indonesia and other ASEAN member
countries. --Antara
