Rhino couples sent home

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Several Sumatran rhinoceros couples will soon be returned from Britain to their original habitat in southern Sumatra because they failed to produce any offspring.

The two-horned rhinos were sent to the London Zoo several years ago as part of the effort to breed them in captivity, the Director General for Preservation of Forest and Conservation of Nature Soedjadi, said as reported by Antara.

However, nothing has come of it so far and the authorities in London agreed that there might be a better chance if they were returned to their original habitat, Soedjadi said.

The Sumatran rhino has been declared as an endangered species as their numbers have continued to dwindle into the dozens. (emb)
